AMD to roll out the 400-series Promontory Chipsets just after the 300 series was in!

A good news for those waiting for AMD’s second-generation Ryzen processors as they are not coming alone. The company has decided to accompany them with the all-new 400-series motherboard chipset. Although there won’t be any compatibility issue for those using the existing socket AM4 motherboards based on 300-series chipsets (with BIOS updates).

400-series Promontory Chipset

It feels like yesterday when the 300 series chipsets were first introduced to us and now this development makes us feel like we are time traveling. The info regarding this chipset was found on the PCIe Integrators List of PCI-SIG which is the standards governing body of the PCI bus.

The Listing

The first thing that we noticed in the listing is that the 400-series chipset will feature PCI-Express gen 3.0 general purpose lanes. You can better understand the difference between the 300 series and the 400 series by comparing the purpose lanes. The 300-series chipset only features up to 8 PCIe gen 2.0 general purpose lanes.
Here are some of the exclusive features of AMD Ryzen socket AM4 processors:

  • Additional gen 3.0 lanes beside the 16 lanes allocated to PEG
  • 4 lanes serving as chipset bus
  • A 32 Gb/s M.2 slot
  • Gen 3.0 general purpose lanes
