Currently the top of the line SoC that Qualcomm offers is their Snapdragon 835 platform. Which can pretty much be found on every other flagship smartphone out there. Though being a powerful chip, the Snapdragon 835 is certainly getting old. Which leads us to believe that it’s about time that the Qualcomm launches its Snapdragon 845 SoC. An updated version of its current model that is also expected to be based on the same 10nm manufacturing process.
According to some reports Samsung will be handling the manufacturing of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chips. Which does seem rather logical as Samsung was working with Qualcomm to manufacture the Snapdragon 835, before Qualcomm decided to work with TSMC. Though as for the chips based on a smaller manufacturing process such as 7nm. We still have to wait, probably till the end of next year.
In terms of specs he Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 will come equipped with update Kryo cores. That will also be coupled with a better Adreno GPU inside. Basically the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 would be a more optimized version of the current Snapdragon 835. Something you might be familiar with, as Intel does the same thing with its chips.
Just like the Galaxy S8, Samsung might also hold exclusive rights to the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip and might get featured on the Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone next year. That alongside the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 will also feature their own Exynos version. Which might be the Samsung Exynos 8900, as currently Samsung is using the Exynos 8895 on its international Galaxy S8 models.
When it comes to smartphone chips, the technology is way ahead of what others are doing. Which includes companies like Nvidia, that will now be moving on to the 12nm manufacturing process for its VOLTA GPU. While smartphones will be getting the taste of a 7nm chip probably at the end of the year.
